I wasn’t expecting to hear from you after such a long time. I thought you had forgotten me, but today I received confirmation that the record has been sent.”

I think the second form "did not expect for a long time" sounds as a kind of general conclusion and as a retrospective period judgement. I had reached to that conclusion before receiving the message .

So I think "did not expect for a long time" fits better with what I want to express.

Am I right here ?

Comment: Was not expecting describes your feelings at the time you (presumably heard from them); did not expect describes your feelings from some point in the past up to and including the time you heard from them.
